Yes, but keep that in perspective. Ubuntu comes with access to over 25,000
software applications through its repositories. Most of those updates are
for applications and not the os itself.

Not so about XP - check "microsoft.public.windowsxp.general" - note there
as many, or more, problem posts as in this newsgroup.

A pessimist might interpret that to mean that although XP has problems
the users can at least still get online. it is also reasonable to expect
there to be far fewer Vista users than XP users at this time.

So if the groups look about equal it actually looks really bad for Vista...

And a product that was "new" in April 2006 (more than a year old now).

Vista's newer than his news client.

I agree, calling someone a loser over and over again gets old really fast.

The seventy or so updates will download directly after a new install of
Ubuntu.. there is no indication that they relate to 25,000 programs that the
user may or may not choose to download at some later time..

Only if you don't know how to read. You can check each and every update
if you know how.

vista has about 5% of the computer market
xp has somthing like 85-90%

so if they are equal that means vista is a disaster, which it is!

i think vista needs another 3 to 6 months to mature,, then it will be
great..and i would say this time next year,,, xp will be like win 98
when xp came out..more of a second choice os to use. i no for a fact
microsoft is consentrating more on vista sp1 than xp sp3 as there now
saying xp sp3 will not be out till 2008 ,,i cant see that i am sure it
will be out for this year,,i can see vista sp1 being ready before xp
sp3. i think give it 1 year and vista will be on 70% of pc,s ,,but in
the mean time you can still run xp and vista on dual boot or virtual pc
so you have the best of both worlds.

I have the best of two worlds with a Ubuntu/XP dual boot :-)

Nor does it mean that there are 70 or so updates.

It only means that there are 70 or so *packages* affected by updates. Yes,
there is a difference.

The other week, there was one Open Office update that affected 10 or so
Open Office packages.

So the update manager will show 10 updated packages when in fact it simply
is one update affecting said 10 packages.

That said, why does this even matter anyway?

I get more updates in XP a week than I get in Ubuntu a month...

Ubuntu downloaded and installed 72 individual updates.. the point being made
was that all OS and associated software require updates now and again..
that's a good thing isn't it? constant improvement without incurring costs
on the part of the user?
