Update fails reply from microsoft

I have posted replies to several treads regarding the update problems we are
having I sent an e-mail to microsoft and received my reply this morning .
Here it is for all to see. Its way too complicated for me to even attempt .
I am too old and computer illiterate to start fooling around with this stuff
.. I may just not update and if my computer crashes I'll buy a Mac. I think
Microsoft should write a new update that works Why do they think everything
must be corrupted . Maybe their update was written incorrectly . It seems
strange so many people have corrupted files all of a sudden .

Let's try to remove the previous version of .NET Framework and reinstall all

Step 1: Download Microsoft Windows Installer CleanUp utility
============================================
1. Visit:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/9/D/E9D80355-7AB4-45B8-80E8-983A48D5E1BD/msicuu2.exe
2. Save the file to your Desktop
3. Please double click the file msicuu2.exe on the Desktop to install this
tool on your computer.



Step 2: Remove .NET Framework 1.1
========================
1. Click Start -> (All) Programs->Windows Installer Clean Up.
2. See if you can find .NET Framework software. If so, remove it.
3. Restart the computer and see if the issue still exists.

suggestions to reinstall .NET Framework 1.1 and the updates for it.

Package and the updates from the following link and save them to the C drive

2. Click Start, click Run, type MSPAINT, and click OK.

3. In Paint, click Paste under the Edit Menu, click Save under the File
menu, type a file name for the snap shot, choose JPEG as "Save as type",
click "Desktop" on the left pane, and click Save.

4. Please find the screenshot on the Desktop and send it as an attachment
to: v-30joya@mssupport.microsoft.com.



Note: When attaching files to emails, the process will vary depending on the
email application being used. While you are composing the email, most
applications will provide you with either an "Attach" button or Paper Clip
Icon to click in order to attach a file. Once clicking this button/icon you
must browse to the file you wish to attach and select it by either double
clicking it or clicking it once and then clicking on the "Attach" button.

I have to wonder, with so many having this problem ( myself included), will
MS issue an update that actually works? What about all the folks that do not
even make it to these forums?
It would not appear to me, they even really tested this update prior to
releasing it!! What a pain.

I am not trying this . I do not understand enough to know what they are
talking about . I think they should fix their update

Thank you for posting a fix I think ? I woke up this morning and once again I
tried to install this netframe update. I too kept getting the update bubble
shield thingy after updating it 100 times! I saw that the update website page
had a forum help and decided to give it a try. Ray &Fran your copy and paste
from your email might have done the trick, I uninstalled the old netframe
thing and reinstalled the 3 other files just like it said to do. If it is
fixed it should not pop up again tonight or tommorow morning like it was
doing. The directions are very simple to do, you just have to take your time
and read slowly on what to do. I will see if this fix really did work or not.
I will reply back once again and see if it sticks. Another thing, 1 your not
too old to do this it's easy. 2 your not computer illiterate at all. 3 Do not
buy an over priced MAC.

A corrected patch should be released
I have some servers on production and I can not play with them to install a
simple patch mainly becuase they are hosting critical applications.
I'm not able to load the .net 1.1 KB 928365 from windows update on any of my
servers.

Thank for the confidence. I know just enough to get myself in trouble but
not enough to get out of trouble if I need to .
I will wait to see if what they sent really works. before trying it .
I replied back to Microsoft support and asked why so many people seem to
have Corrupted Files and suggested they release a new update that works . I
am sure many people do not even know these newsgroups exist and will never
know what is going on .

Thx for taking the time to post this. The .NET Framework update failed on
all 3 of my computers so there's definitely something wrong...but the problem
was resolved after going through the clean up and reinstallation steps. I'm
satisfied that the update is successfully installed but this is a lot to
expect the user to perform.

I did the same thing and got the same reply (yesterday). Followed the steps
to remove the .NET Framework and then re-installed it and did the two updates
and everything worked fine.

Sounds like you are really screwed no matter what to me...

What is your backup scheme/plan?
What do you backup your files/folders to?
If the hard disk drive dies on you - is all lost?
What if it won't booit for some other reason?
Are you going to have to take it to someone in that case and *hope* they can
recover _something_?

From what I can tell - people are having to uninstall .NET 1.1/2 (manually
or automatically) and reinstall it to get things working with this patch -
in SOME cases. Not everyone has had this problem.

I am not saying you should not be frustrated, that you should not be upset
and that you *should* be expected to do so many steps to try and remedy this
issue... I am just *asking* you what your backup plan is for the worst case
scenario when it comes to your computer and all the information on it....

After all - this .NET fiasco is by FAR the lesser of most of the bad things
that *could* occur and do to systems like yours every day.

Maybe I am screwed . I use my Pc for nothing more than surfing the web and
sending e-mail and maybe storing a few songs. I just cannot believe that MS
would release an update that causes so much work for so many people who are
not familiar with the language and processes .

Its ok for all the techie people who can read the instructions and
understand . My backup plan is to go to a computer shop and take my disks
and say fix if I crash. When I used a computer at work I called tech support
and they took control of my Pc and fixed my problems . What are the millions
of people who do not even know there is an issue with the update doing .
When I updated it said downloaded ,Initialized, Installed and completed
successfully . Only that I knew to check add /remove programmes for
installed fixes did I realize the 2 updates were not there and the fact they
keep appearing to be installed.

Again - my question does not have to do with your understanding of the
current set of instruction you got and seemingly cannot understand/follow...

You *should* have a backup plan in place in case things like this happen (or
worse).

A computer is one of the few things in life that gives you more options when
it comes to being able to prevent issues OR being able to roll back when
issues occur. Windows XP and beyond has "sysytem restore" for the system
files and you could easily drag/drop your files/folders occassionally to an
external USB drive or burn a CD/DVD with stuff on it.

You run into a tree with your car and you cannot just roll-back to the day
before you ran into the tree. If your house catches fire and all your
important family pictures and financial information gets burned up - you
usually cannot just go to your backup safe and pull out the duplicate
versions. A computer gives you this ability.

Have you tried just using System Restore to roll back to the day before you
installed the updates and then setting your Automatic Updates to "Download
and Notify"?

As for the "millions of people" --> let me point out again - this is not an
"all-encompassing issue". Some people will not have an issue at all - most
likely. You seem to know more than you want to admit to (you actually
LOOKED in Add or Remove Programs) - which is why your backup plan surprises
me... or should I say - the lack of one.

And let me explain the instruction Microsoft gave you in even simpler
terms...

George posted this "fix" yesterday or the day before. It is essentially the
same solution that Microsoft sent to you, but in far more understandable,
rational, real-person, non-techie lingo for actual humans who use these
machines. You might feel more confident about giving the solution a try
following George's instructions, rather than Microsoft's. Hey, maybe
Microsoft will realize they need to hire support people who can communicate
in non-techiese for all the rest of us out here.

Also, to make things as easy as possible when the solution requires the
installation of more than one file or program, I always download all of the
files and programs to my desktop first so I have them; then I deal with the
removal and installation issues.

Here is EXACTLY what you do to solve this problem for Windows XP 32
bit. If you happen to have a rarer 64 bit version, server OS, or
SOMETHING else follow the same general instructions but get the
version of the files appropriate for your system but first, Microsoft
has pissed me off beyond belief. I looked in my log and this same
thing happened 6/2006...thanks MSFT for torturing us again this year.
I thought it was a familiar feeling...nice branding...this is a huge
humiliation for their .NET team in my opinion or perhaps we should
start calling them the .NOT team...anyway....

Steps:
1) Go to the control panel and select the add/remove software tool
then TRY and remove everything with .NET in the name. If you can
remove everything go to step 3. If you cannot remove everything go to
step 2.

2) Go and download the windows installer clean up tool at:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

run the windows installer clean up tool and BE CAREFUL to only select
the .NET items from the list and remove them. Note: this will likely
leave the names as "dead links" in the Add/Remove Software list
(ahhh ...Microsoft thoroughness at its best) but not to worry they
will do no harm and will get fixed when we finish. It's possible to
clean them up but let's stay out of the registry :-)

3) Go and get the file "dotnetfx.exe" this is ".NET 1.1" from:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...E3-F589-4842-8157-034D1E7CF3A3&displaylang=en

install it.

4) Go and get the file "NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe" this is the ".NET
1.1 service pack 1" from: my personal website (JUST KIDDING,
RELAX...get everything of course from a microsoft.com domain)

install it.

5) Install the SECURITY patch, the dreaded KB928366, we have all grown
to hate. You can install it from the Windows Update program (be sure
to ONLY select the KB928366 patch and NOTHING else, we dont want to
put back 2.0 or 3.0 yet). It's OK go ahead and click ...it will be
alright...you can do it...it's just one more time... :-)

6) Re-run the Windows Update and you can add back in .NET 2.0 and 3.0

7) Post to thank me...

Now WHY hasn't Microsoft posted instructions yet? .... What is UP?!

I do not think I need to restore my computer to a time before the update.My
system tells me the updates installed successfully . I do know enough to
look in the add/remove program location to see what I have on my pc. The
files are not there and when I do a check for Microsoft updates I am told
the 2 critical updates need to be installed . I have my pc set to always
check for updates and notify me when they are ready to be installed .
