turning off freesync shrinks screen image?

I have a 32" LG Ultragear 1080p monitor. i was playing with the display settings and changed the display to 1440 and the image shrunk to about half the screen size and only appears in the center of the screen with several inches of black around all 4 sides of the picture. I changed the resolution back to 1920x1080 but the image remains tiny unless i turn on freesync. when i turn off freesync it shrinks the image back down and its extremely annoying. no matter what settings i change the image will no longer fill the entire monitor unless i turn on freesync, and I dont want freesync on as it ins
