Steam and XBox games either will not start or terminate shortly after start up, why is this?

A while back I purchased a new PC with Windows 11 and loaded Steam to play the games I've been using for years (e.g. Total War: Empire, Civilization V, VI, ...) These games ran for a few minutes than the fan would kick into high gear and the game would freeze and sometimes it would just terminate with out an error. Looked online to possible solutions with no luck. Thinking it might be associated with Steam gaming service, I loaded XBox which I play MS Solitaire with out issue and purchased Age of Empires.
