memory stick has lost all data

Copy and paste it instead of clicking on it and see if it works that way.

Worked fine here.

It looks like a useful program. Wish I'd had about two weeks ago- I would

have been able to tell you if it works well or not. I also had a pen drive

that worked one day, but not the next. I use them to transfer files, but

never for irreplaceable ones.

I had tried connecting to the site both ways but I guess it just wasn't

working at the time because I have connected OK now but still nothing is

found on the card.

files once windows recognises the drive properly again? Any chance this will

work?

I can see what it going on here but my daughter didn't save the documents on

the hard drive first. Everything was saved on the stick. That is teenagers

for you. It doesn't matter how many times you tell them to save in a number

of places it doesn't go in at all.



Will there be any trace of the MS Office (word) files on the computer that

they were produced on even if they are actually saved directly to the memory

stick?

Very doubtful that it will even be able to be formatted. Windows will

probably try, then error out. The odds of recovering the files after format

(if it works) are very high against being able to do so.

I had hoped that the files were originally on the HD

and simply moved over to the USB stick.



Since they were never on the HD then I guess...hopefully

she has now learned her lesson

I agree...

do not format the card



I think the data are gone...

but I suppose it would not hurt to try other data recovery software





maybe even a live linux cd
 
Maybe I missed it, but have you tried "chkdsk /f" ?

You did mention a bad boot sector, chkdsk can fix this with a "chkdsk /mbr".

It's worth a try at this stage of the game.

We were talking about the flashdrive. He wants him to set the

partition on the flashdrive to be active.

A couple of questions you haven't answered. Did you try the stick on

another computer?

Did you try the stick in another USB port? Check the pins for possible

damage?

Wiggle it (very gently) when trying to read it?

My daughter has tried it and I have tried it on a couple of computers. It is

in A1 condition with no obvious damage. Tried other USB ports too but no

change I am afraid.

I had one go through the washing machine over the weekend. Didn't

notice it until it finally came out of the pocket in the dryer, which

caused me to go check because of the noise. I let it sit for 2 days and

amazingly, everything is still on it and it works fine.



I guess you never know what will cause a flash drive to fail.
