Is it necessary to have bitlocker enabled on my laptop?

When I first bought this laptop (Yoga 7 2-in-1) I had it for one day before it updated and restarted in "bitlocker" and had me put in a recovery key. It also just did it again after updating Windows but the previous times I have updated Windows since the first time after getting this laptop it didn't open bitlocker and have me put in the recovery key. I previously had Macbooks so I am still new to Windows computers. It is a bit of a hassle dealing with the bitlocker stuff so I was just wondering if it is necessary to have on or if I can turn it off.
