Try renaming the SoftwareDistribution folder
Click Start, Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.
Rename the "SoftwareDistribution" folder:
a. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%, and then click OK.
b. Right-click the SoftwareDistribution folder, and then click Rename.
c. Type SoftwareDistribution.old, and then press ENTER to rename this folder.
Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.
You'll lose the history but as you haven't got one it's irrelevant.
By renaming this folder, you'll clear any corruption or temporary downloaded files etc.
If everything works okay afterwards, then delete the folder you renamed.
Windows re-creates it next time you visit the update site.
Some have to reboot after renaming the folder. Again clear the Temporary internet files
before visiting WU.
If still no joy, try installing the new WU client - see this article
The Windows Update Web site and the Microsoft Update Web site do not scan for updates when
you repair a failed installation of Windows XP Service Pack 2 or of Windows XP Service
Pack 1

| I cleared the TIC did the start/run thing, tried WU.
| It says there is no history of downloads, nothing.
| Still says I need to upgrade WU components and choosing that option and dwnld
| gives me nothing, no error.
| I clicked on the details for the download. that says 0 KB, 0 min, ready to
| install.
|
| I remember I might have downloaded that once and then decided not to install
| it after I read what it was. I have looked for a file that might be that but
| didn't find anything. Don't really have much idea about where to look.
|
| Thanks for your help.
