When I boot up Windows XP, it gets to showing the desktop, but the a

Dos window pops up that tells me it's running cmd.exe from the sys32

directory , before disappearing again. I don't recall it ever doing

this before, so is it normal, but I've never noticed before?

There is no DOS in WinXP.

CMD.EXE is the advanced batch interpreter of Windows XP and emulates DOS.

There is a BAT file that ran at boot up causing CMD.EXE to be executed and ran that batch

process thus the command prompt console windows you saw.

Have a look at your two Startup folders, or else examine the items under the

Startup tab under msconfig.exe.
