I have three Server 2k3 machines with WSUS 2.0 that I have been tasked with
upgrading. The Parent server and one of the downstream servers upgraded just
fine. The last one is giving me problems though. The install program ran
its normal course but ended up displaying an error message that said the
install had failed and that it made a backup of the database. I checked the
error log and it looks like something happened when the installer tried to
uninstall the WSUS 2.0. I decided to redownload wsus 2.0 and reinstall it by
using the "use existing database" option. When I get to the portion of the
install that requires me to point to the exiting database (which i point to
the directory it was backed up to), the option is greyed out. So I went back
and tried to run the WSUS 3.0 install again and hoped that if I was able to
point to the backup directory of the existing database, it would pickup the
older Microsoft SQL server desktop engine database and convert it to the new
version that is uses now. No luck on that. So I did a fesh install of WSUS
2.0 in hopes there was an option in the web interface to point to another
database. Well I have looked everywhere and don't see an option for this. I
will include my log from the failed install, and hopefully you guys can point
me in the right direction. Thanks.

I just tried to upgrade my fresh wsus 2.0 install to 3.0 and it failed again.
This is exactly what it says at the point of failure.

Windows Server Update Services could not be upgraded. A database backup was
created at D:\WSUS. For more information, see the Setup log
"C:\DOCUME~1\CLLCAD~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WSUSSetup.log".

FWIW my guess is that unless something was done by the install to correct
this (not shown?) you may need to do it manually and retry:

Failure to install the pre-requisite .NET Framework v2.0 is exactly the
fault in this scenario.

WSUS3 does not install the .NET Framework, although it's supposed to
generate a popup at install time noting that the Framework 2.0 is missing. I
personally observed this phenomenon when I was testing various installation
scenarios a few weeks ago.

I appreciate all the help form everybody but found out it was a simple
restart that had to be done to fix the problem. I did notive that out .net
framework was out of date and upgraded it. I never restarted it because it
said that it did not require a restart are install and also there was a
application on the server that prevented us from installing during business
hours. I never used the old database information but cause i found out it
really didn't contain anything important since it was a down stream server.
Thanxs for the input from everybody though.
