won't recognize mouse, plug and play, ps/2

I have recently had xp reinstalled on my computer. I am randomly having the

following problem.

Sometime I will boot up and it won't recognize my mouse (the mouse won't

move) and if I hit Ctl-Alt-Del several times, the task manager will finally

appear, but it won't allow me to use it. I can't click on it, I can't hit "E"

to end task. Basically, it seems it won't recognize my keyboard or the

mouse. Everything is just locked. So, then, I manually turn the computer off,

which I have been told repeatedly is very bad for the hard drive and which I

have had to do dozens and dozens of times with this computer. When I turn the

computer bafck on, everything works. Then it might work fine thru several

restarts, then it won't work again. My mouse is a plug-and-play, very old

(and very good) Logitech TrackMan Vista.



BTW--computer is HP Pavilion a1540n running windows media center edition but

without all the unneeded HP junk on it.

I don't know if this is significant--probably not since this problem was

happening before this new thing appeared--but in the lst several days, I will

go to a website in Internet Explorer, and I will get this error message of

"stack overflow at line: ___." I click OK, and then it lets me go to the site.



Prior to this, it would also not save my refresh rate (defaulting to 60 Hz),

but I have fixed that via the registry.



Finally, I have checked the "notify me of replies" box for the discussion

forums, but I never get notified.

You should press Alt to highlight the Toolbar, then cursor left, right,

up and down, to the "Shut Down", "Restart" option.

When the computer is off, try unplugging, then reinserting the mouse.

Also try a different mouse; it could be failing on you.

Microsoft has several updates for that area,911562,899588,905749,914882.

Also,you need to install the boards chip set installation utility,get that

from

the mfg web site (intel,amd,etc)...

There are too many questions and too many unknowns to offer much more

than a weak guess!



You can improve your chances of receiving helpful information by

following these steps and responding:



Reduce the possibility of existing malware on your system.



Download, install, update and do a full scan with these free malware

detection programs:



Malwarebytes (MBAM): http://malwarebytes.org/

SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/



They can be uninstalled later if desired.



Describe current antivirus and malware situation... McAfee, Norton,

Spybot, AVG, ZoneAlarm, etc.



Click Start, Run and in the box enter:



msinfo32



Click OK, and when the System Summary info appears, click Edit, Select

All, Copy and then paste back here.



There would be some personal information (like System Name and User

Name) or whatever appears to be only your business that you can delete

from the paste.



If you are goign to be registry editing, I would advise doing a

registry backup first.



Before making any changes to your registry, back it up with this

popular free tool:

I don't know why you don't get replies - that depends on the method

you are using to follow your topic(s). You can just check back

periodically until you figure it out or if you tell us what you are

using (Outlook Express, etc.), someone can help. The topic

accumulates information, so you won't miss anything - you may just get

behind a little.
