Am running

Operating System : Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

Version : 5.01.2600 Service Pack 3

Problem is that when I go to the Windows update site it shows the

following updates available:

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 Update for Windows Server 2003 and

Windows XP x86 (KB982168)

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 Security

Update for Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, and Windows XP x86

(KB979909)

I tryed to install them along with others updates listed and it showed

they succeeded along with the others but when I restart system and go

back to the update site it lists them again but shows they are

downloaded and ready to install so I install them again and it shows

they succeded again. But when I go to add / remove programs in

control panel and have it show updates it shows all the updates except

the 2 above.

I need some help as to what to do here. Hurry before MS cuts this

group please.

TIA

First run the Fix It in this KB article & see if the update will install after doing so:

How to fix MSI software update registration corruption issues

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971187

If no joy, see...

When installing updates using Windows update or Microsoft Update you may receive Error 0x643 or 0x80070643 (23 Oct-09)

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976982

Then proceed per the following:

=====================

Step #1 => Before doing anything else, write down what .NET Framework versions are currently installed:

How to determine which versions of the .NET Framework are installed and whether service packs have been applied

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318785

Step #2 => Now see Resolution Method 2 in this related KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100

After running the .NET Framework Cleanup Tool (not the Windows Installer Cleanup utility!), reinstall all .NET Framework versions (but only the ones you wrote down in #1 above) manually using the download links on the page then run Windows Update manually to install security updates for same.

NB: If you remove .NET Framework 3.5 (SP1) using the tool, reinstalling ..NET Framework 3.5 will also install .Net Framework 2.0 SP2 and 3.0 SP2; then Windows Update will offer .NET Framework 3.5 SP1.

IMPORTANT! => If you remove .NET Framework 3.5 (SP1), reinstall your ..NET Framework versions in the following order:

1. .Net Framework 3.5, then...

2. .Net Framework 1.1, then...

3. .Net Framework 1.1 SP1

NB: KB923100 references this page: http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2006/05/30/611355.aspx. Please read ALL of it as well as the related page http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/pages/8904493.aspx before using the .NET Framework Cleanup Tool.

Step #3 => Check-in at Windows Update and install any critical security updates offered.

Tryed to run the fixit thing from

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971187 and got a message that it faled

to initalize.

Tryed to DL a .net cleanup from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976982

and got that file or directory not exist.

All the other stuff is over my head. I am not a computer guru or

whatever. Think I will just ignore this 2 updates or whatever. I

think they can be marked not to show.

Thanks all for help.

Same problem here and I guess many are seeing it too..

Followed all your steps, PA Bear, removing all .NET installations and

re-installing in the specified order but I installed 3.5 (SP1) rather than

3.5. After a visit to Windows Update for 5 further updates only 3 were

applied, leaving the 2 problem updates un-installed.

Have I got to repeat this process with 3.5 rather than 3.5 (SP1) as the

first re-install step?

Or am I just wasitng my time?

I even DLed a file named dotnetfx35setup.exe from one of MS sites

(Don't remember where I been to so many trying to fix this) and when

run it gave the options to remove or repair Microsoft .NET Framework

3.5 whatever so I chose repair option.

Next a box came up saying it was calculating transfer rate then saying

it was initalizing transfer (download?). It sat for almost 10 minutes

going back and forth between these two until I got tired of it and

canceled it. Then it wanted to send a trouble report to whoever and I

said F them and canceled it.

Give me back my 98 box!! I have about had it with this!!! :-(

@kraut only: What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and

is your subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than

Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the

computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought

it)?

Have you ever had occasion to do a Repair Install of WinXP?

Running the latest version of AVG Free with the latest updates and

newest SUPERAntiSpyware with the latest updates and using Windows

firewall which is on.

No to Nortons or any other. And no repair install of XP. Other then

this update problem I have never had problems with this system. I do

not mess with it a lot. I pretty much run it the way it is without

adding / deleting a lot of programs.

Thanks for all the suggestion but they have been posted here before

and I have tried most of them to no avail. Like I said prior I am not

a computer guru and am not aout to start deleting stuff and tying to

reinstall things as someone suggested. My luck I would just make a

worse mess.

I think as long as the system is running I will just ignore the

updates that I am having trouble with. Who know - maybe down the road

someone will figure out a solution that us non computer minded people

can use and post it here.

Thanks again all.

Most, but not all, huh? Guess the one you need you haven't tried yet.

Probably, but after a while a person says enough is enough especially

if they are not really a computer minded person and they do not really

know all the ins and outs to begins with.

Maybe one of these days I will go to the MS update site and click on

install and the updates I am having trouble with will install.

Dream on!! :-)

In the meantime, do yourself and everyone else a favor, unplug your computer

from the internet until you get updated, so you don't run the risk of

compromise and infection, and spreading it around.

Then, should you decide you would like to rejoin society, take the computer

to a professional and have it worked on.

You don't need to be any kind of guru to open a free support incident

(unless you don't know how to make a phone call or compose an email).
