My Toshiba downloaded and installed SP3 fine -- or at least it seemed so --
but then it rebooted with a dozen messages "Access is denied" (without any
technical details) in a black window with something "system 32/cmd". Does it
mean that not all the necessary changes has taken place but only part of
them? Should I uninstall SP3 and try install it again? Is it dangerous to
leave my system as it is?

Error message when you try to install WinXP SP3: "Access is denied" or

If the OP uses method three from that article - at this time they should
correct the last line of the script...

The last line of the script they have you copy/paste reads:

secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb
/verbose

That will do you little good... That is a Vista thing. You want this line:

secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb
/verbose

(That is a single line - no matter what word-wrapping does to it.)

If you download the Subinacl.exe and install it and then copy/paste the text
as directed but change out ther last line with the one I have given you and
run it on your system - it eill change the registry and file permissions to
default settings - allowing SP3 to install without running into "access
denied" errors. Essentially - something has happened (some program you
installed/that got installed changed something, etc) to change the
file/folder/registry permissions on your computer and the script on the web
page (with the change I have suggested) should reset those permissions.

In other words - SP3 is fine - there is something specific with your system.
;-) Fix that and install SP3 and be up to date - then you can continue on
and be happy about it.

Shenan, if you've not done so already, please begin a new thread about this
in ...private.mvp.knowledgebase.discussion with a crosspost to
....private.mvp.windowsxp. Preface the subject of your post with: [MS ESC].
Thanks.

May I ask, why did the provide a Vista-based script for a Windows XP system?

Thank you for the tip but in my svcpack.log I haven't found nothing
resembling the messages indicating that an issue is preventing the registry
update (I mean the lines mentioned in the article you recommended:
xxxx.xxx: DoInstallation:DoRegistryUpdates failed.
xxxx.xxx: Access is denied.
xxxx.xxx: Message displayed to the user: Access is denied.)

However in my svcpack.log there are 311 (!) other lines containing the
dreadful word "failed". Should I analize each of the lines?

"Access is denied." ?

I suggest method 3...
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949377

WinXP SP3 - Read all prerequisites for a successful installation
http://msmvps.com/blogs/harrywaldro...requisites-for-a-successful-installation.aspx

Steps to take before you install Windows XP Service Pack 3
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950717

Release Notes for Windows XP Service Pack 3
http://download.microsoft.com/download/c/d/8/cd8cc719-7d5a-40d3-a802-e4057aa8c631/relnotes.htm

Key things to note:

Internet Explorer:
"If you have installed Windows Internet Explorer® 7 or a beta version of
Internet Explorer 8, and then install Windows XP SP3, you cannot uninstall
Internet Explorer. To avoid this, ensure Internet Explorer 7 or a beta
version of Internet Explorer 8 is not installed before installing Windows XP
SP3. If you have already encountered this issue, uninstall Windows XP SP3,
uninstall Internet Explorer, and then reinstall Windows XP SP3."

Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002:
"If you install Windows XP SP3 on a computer running Windows XP Media Center
Edition 2002 with SP1, Windows XP Media Center Edition may malfunction. To
avoid this, install Windows XP SP2 before you install Windows XP SP3. If
this issue has already occurred, uninstall Windows XP SP3, install Windows
XP SP2, and then reinstall Windows XP SP3."

It seems some people are unable to get further updates after installing
SP3... Seems some have experienced a symptom similar to doing a repair
installation on Windows XP - and the same fix seems to work for them for
that...

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

Some people experience an "endless reboot" issue...

From PA Bear [MS MVP]:
Workarounds:

http://msinfluentials.com/blogs/jes...ed-computer-boot-after-installing-xp-sp3.aspx
[NB: The above has been updated many times and now includes "a small tool
that will detect the IntelPPM problem and mitigate it before installing
[WinXP SP3]."

1. Boot into Safe Mode and rename INTELPMM.SYS to INTELPMM.OLD.
2. After booting into Safe Mode:
Start --> Run --> (copy/paste)
sc config intelppm start= disabled
--> OK --> Reboot into normal (Windows) mode.
