Windows updated lost files and my backup files maybe ??

I am not good with computer troubles.My wife was working on our taxes/estimate/invoice folder on Sunday evening, everything was fine, Monday morning comes and my son watched some U-tube in the morning. When my wife went to use the computer around 2 pm. the files were gone, after looking for a bit( been mad too) Windows.old.000 shows up and we can't open it and noticed the backup folder was empty too. We can't find them anywhere what the computer shop says that windows update deleted my files. So do you think I can recovery them??? It is on a NEC laptop computer windows 11 installed 2 years ag
