Windows Update XP Genuine Advantage ARGH!

ok..
I'm trying to update my OS and when I come to the update page the only thing
it will allow me to download is the genuine update tool. Fine. Do it.
But the stupid thing won't install. It just downloads and fails. And then
it won't give me any explaination of why. It says to check download history
and click the failure (x) for more info.. but there is no failure (x).. it's
a canceled (-).
WTF.

FIX THIS MICROSOFT.

And to make things a bit more interesting regarding the download problems
that have been occurring with much more frequency, this coming Tuesday, July
10, is PATCH Tuesday.

Things are going to be a lot of fun then, I'm betting. :>

Otherwise known as "BLACK TUESDSAY" around the net.

A friend's son takes care of all the computers for a Medical Billing
Service. He is responsible for their network consisting of 65
computers which are all identical. He says he has designated one of

practice “Safe Hex” (which could be a number or any common sense
things I assume), running an up-to-date Firewall (a real one), running
an up-to-date antivirus package and hiding behind a router (Stealth).
I do all 4 plus the Black Tuesday Criticals and have never had a
single problem (Knock on Wood). I don’t know if that can be
attributed to the above 4 things or the Black Tuesday Criticals or a
combination of both……. The only problem I have ever had is MS’s
Infamous Malware WGA blaming me of stealing my paid for copy of XP
that I run on my Desktop, a copy that has been running on my desktop
since 04-12-2004 which is when my RECEIPT says I PAID for it! And
this was with the 3rd or 4th (I forget which) release of the Infamous
Malware WGA which means I passed the thief test in the prior releases
of the Infamous Malware WGA which means then that the 3rd or 4th
release of the Infamous Malware WGA had to assume I stole it off of
MYSELF since the prior releases of the Infamous Malware WGA agreed
that the paid for copy of XP on my desktop was, in fact, a legit copy.

I’m 58 years old and have never, in my life, been blamed of stealing
anything (because I haven’t) until this unscrupulous MS faction and
its ferret faced Bill Gates did so. It’s so ironic that I was blamed
of being a thief by a faction that had to appear before a Senate
Investigation Committee looking into their questionable business
practices. Hummmmmm

Using "http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/" worked and now I can update
normally.

But I still shouldn't have to "problem solve" for something as menial as
updating my OS. You'd better take care of this kind of thing Microsoft, or
you're gonna find some PC Geeks turning into Mac Addicts.

oh lord. I'm going to kick my computer.

I thought it worked because when I went back to the update site it showed me
a list of updates, unlike before when it only showed the Genuine Advantage
update.

But now when I download these updates it is doing the same thing as before.
It downloads them but fails to install! I get no error code or anything...
it just sends me off to their troubleshooter (which is not solving anything).

So I need help again.

quiet voice, "oh god, you are making me so freaking angry right now".

Well that's what I'm saying now.

Instead of updating normally, I'm copying the update names and pasting them
into the Microsoft Download Center search bar (in Firefox btw) and
downloading them all manually. This will take a while.

Microsoft, you are making me so freaking angry right now.

Don't worry. Microsoft WGA is going to be tweaked so that it will
detect every copy of Windows XP as being non-genuine. This is what
happens when one tries to fix something that is not broken or trying
to find ghosts.

Tired of the ineffective "anti piracy" crap? Check out Ubuntu. No WPA,
no WGA, no need for an anti virus or anti malware program. It comes with
a built-in firewall and if you add a router hard firewall, it's all you

It apparently isn't about the WGA..
the problem is that nothing will install from their update website for some
reason. When I did it all manually (and still had to go through WGA for
individual updates) it worked fine.

And automatic update should have taken care of this whole thing anyway. I'm
just really annoyed that I have to go through this trouble to get my OS up to
date.

I think Microsoft is unwilling to offer the troubleshooting that they know
will fix this: re-install Windows (and every program that I have).

Try one (or both) of these:
You may even want to do solution 1 and then do *just* 3-5 of solution 2...

Solution to try (1):

Get Dial-a-Fix:
http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

Use its options to fix Windows Installer, fix Windows Update, and all the
Registration Center options.
Turn off the "Empty System32\Catroot 2"
Then click "GO"

Do NOT do "Flush SoftwareDistribution".

Reboot and try again with the updates...


Solution to try (2):

1) Reboot and logon as a user with Administrative Privs...
2) Immediately run the following batch script (You will have to create it by
cutting/pasting as directed.)

- Click Start, Run, type: notepad C:\register.bat and press Enter. Choose
Yes when you are prompted.
