Windows update will not stop

I posted this before and the responses were too expert for me. In the meantime, one recommendation was stop and restart windows update in svces, did this and now cannot restart it as the windows update is still rolling along like it is searching for updates - will not stop and simply starts doing this whenever I start the laptop. I tried the command prompt fix and after typing the first command "net stop wuauserv", it says "this service is starting or stopping. Please try again later". Please advise and note I am not an expert user. I am unable to use troubleshooter for same reason, just
