I hope someone can help me out. On Sunday 4/10 I took an image backup of my C drive that only has my OS on it. Data is on D Drive. Overnight on Tue my system took an update. When I got to the system Wed AM I had a black screen with the 7601 not genuine message. I rebooted and the system went into the screen where it says MS Updates are being applied. I left for work. Upon my return 8 hours later the same message was still there. I rebooted into safe mode figuring I would run malwarebytes. In safe mode I got a MS screen that said MS Updates failed and something about removing / reverting. I waited 4 hours and figured the heck with it.
I reimaged the drive with the backup from 4/10. 20 min later I was able to get the login screen and enter my login / pwd. The system went to my desktop with my desktop pictures but no icons showed. There was also no 7601 error. I left it in this state over night.
On Thur AM the system had not progressed at all so I reimaged to my image backup from 4/1 which was 13GB smaller than the image from 4/10. 20 min later I was logged into my system and all was well. It was like nothing bad happened at all. I ran malwarebytes and no issues were found. I am happy.
Fri AM I am back to the 7601 black screen after having taken updates over night. I quickly just reimage using my 4/1 backup and 20 min later I am good. I ran malbwarebytes again with no issues. I uninstalled / reinstalled Mcafee just to make sure there were no issues. I then turned off all MS automatic updates. The system has worked fine now for 3 days.
I now look at what is pending for windows update. I don't want to go thru this all again. Can anyone help me understand what happened? Can anyone look at the list of pending updates below and tell me which one did this to my system or which one not to install?
