done it 15 times today. I can't get rid of the Update icon or hide the
install either... Its driving me nuts. I installed BitDefender on Tues and
had this issue ever since

Did you contact BitDefender and ask them why their product will not
allow the installation of a *needed* Security update that addresses a
severe vulnerability ?
http://www.bitdefender.com/site/contact/

The repeated offering of KB955430 is explained in the 'Known issues with
this security update' section:
MS08-069: Description of the security update for XML Core Services 4.0:
November 11, 2008
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/954430

You can avoid this issue by either doing a Clean boot of XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353
and then install the previously download automatic update or, download
the update and *save* it:

Boot to Safe Mode and then install it: A description of the Safe Mode
options in Windows XP
