I just reinstalled windows xp sp2 and when I went to update, there were many
critical updates (71) and when I went to install them, thay all failed. When
I go to the windows update site and click "Review Update History" they don't
even show up. Why are the updates failing? How can I fix this?

Believe it or not, I'm having the exact same problem! I just reinstalled XP
SP2 and was told I had 77 critical updates. They all downloaded but failed
to install. I tried again, selecting only one of the 77 and it failed
immediately. I tried the first one in the list, the last one, etc... and
they all failed. Like travisM, would appreciate any help and/or advice!
Thanks, Justin

I am having the same problem as you guys are. Critical updates are not being
accepted. I was going to remove SP2 but it does not show up in the Add/Remove
programs list.

I reinstalled again, hoping to fix it, but still no good.

I found a solution that worked for me posted on the windows update
discussion. I'm at my office now so don't have the details of which one
discussion thread it was, but can post the details later. Basically, you
have to disable auto update service, run a batch program from command prompt,
uninstall the auto updater, reinstall the auto updater, and then retry the
critical updates. I did all this, tried to install 1 critical update (which
worked), then tried 5 (which worked) at a time, then did 16 at a time which
also worked. I left for the office after starting the computer on doing the
remaining 55... hopefully they will all be done when I return home tonight.

If you don't want to wait until later... I was able to find the solution by
getting the error code from the windowsupdate.log file and then searched on
that error code in the discussion groups.

Regards,

Justin

I FIXED IT!!!! You have to use dial-a-fix. It fixed WU 100%!

Here is a copy of the solution that I found that worked for me... it was a
post by tourque3000@gmail.com on 6/21/07.... I was able to install all the
critical updates this afternoon after going through this fix process...

Okay. So this is the process that I went through to get it working:

1. stopped the windows update service ( Start > run > net stop
wuauserv )

2. renamed the directory windows/SoftwareDistributionto windows/
SoftwareDistribution.old

3. uninstalled the windows installer 3.1 (KB893803)

4. created a batch file that went through and registered the
associated DLL's, Here is the structure of that batch file

net stop wuauserv

regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 msxml.dll
regsvr32 msxml2.dll
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
regsvr32 urlmon.dll
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 mssip32.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 sccbase.dll
regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll

net start wuauserv

5. restarted the computer

6. Opened a browser and went to windows update

7. Downloaded the Windows installer 3.1 --> success!

8. Restarted

9. Downloaded the rest of the updates

If you have any comments or want any clarification on steps, dont
hesitate to post!

-Jared

-- What is "dial-a-fix"? where and how do I get it? How do I "create a
batch file" that will go through and register all of the associated DLL's? I
downloaded all of the 77 udates to a removable hard drive from another
computer and manually installed all of them, however, I still can't get any
new downloads nor can I get the newest definitions for microsoft defender
because they won't install. The manually downloaded updates show in my
add/remove program folder but not in my updated history folder.
Thank You
