Windows Update and now my home computers cannot reach one another in the network?

We have two computers that use a home network, here we share folders and we can read and write to one another's hard drives. Yesterday my computer took an update and now today we can no longer access one another folders? Instead a window pops up asking each of use to 'Enter network credentials' (user name and pw) - but we have never had anything like this before?
