Windows sign in fails for my apps (Visual Studio, Teams)

My Visual Studio says I need to re-enter my credentials. But when I do, it gets stuck in a loop after asking "Stay signed in to all your apps". Regardless of whether I say "This app only", it fails. Specifically, it asks me to authenticate over and over (with Microsoft Authenticator). One additional message I receive that may be helpful is: "Visual Studio encountered problems while attempting to access some directories... Which directories would you like to continue using?" This is accompanied by a message "Unknown status: unexpected." I should note that I use Windows via a personal Microsoft
