Windows Media Player doesn't recognize external DVD drive

How do I add an external disc drive to the WMP's recognized devices so that I can use it? The internal drive is failing so I do not want to use it anymore.Only the (internal) D: drive, display and speakers are listed as devices. There is no option for adding another device under the options\devices tab.
