Not Robert. I'm his wife, Gabrielle. I'm an IT tech and really need to get to bed for work tomorrow, but I ran into a problem.
I was in my computer,. Windows 7 Pro, reboots every night at 3am. I was in it, trying to look though my email. Outlook got funky. It blinked a lot. I tried to open Task Manager to close it. It never came up. I right-clicked the icon on the task bar and closed the Outlook window. But Task Manager still didn't come up. I pressed Ctrl+ALT+Del and got a strange message. I wish I'd written it down. I clicked Okay. My screen resolution was changed (lower) and my task bar was gone.
I pushed in the power button to reboot it. I waited. The screen (a 32 inch LCD TV connected by HDMI) stayed on HDMI. It didn't say No Signal. Usually HDMI stays for a second then I see the motherboard splash screen and eventually Windows. It's usually pretty fast since I put in the SSD and Windows runs from there. I heard the startup music. Still just see HDMI. I unplugged and replugged the HDMI cable at the computer. Nothing. I could see the mouse and keyboard were lit up. I could even RDP into it from my tablet and see Windows running just fine. But when I started VNC Server and VNCed to it (because RDP locks it on the local side and I needed to see about the video card/monitor from the local side) all I saw was black on the connection and a white mouse cursor that didn't move. In fact if I moved my finger around, the cursor didn't move as it should. If I tapped elsewhere on the screen, more cursors appeared where I tapped. Moving the local keyboard and mouse did nothing either. VNC should allow both local and remote control. I have it set to allow.
So here I am, black screen on the TV but Windows running and RDP-able. Device Manager said the video card was working properly. Can't check out the monitor settings while in RDP.
What just happened and what's my easiest way to fix it?
I have 8GB of RAM. At the time Outlook went funky, I had Firefox, Outlook, and Windows Live Mail running actively. Abyss Web Server and Avira Antivirus running in the background.
BTW: I'm posting this question from this computer while RDPed from my tablet. Windows is definitely running. Something is wrong in the video area. I do believe it's an onboard video card.
