Windows is activated, but Product Key not recognised

I have had a Windows 8.1 Asus laptop for many years. I was considering upgrading it to Windows 10. My problem is, it states that Windows is Activated, but when I type in my Installed Key, it is not recognised. The OEM key is the same number as the Installed Key. Windows will not accept the Product ID because '0' are not recognised and the Product ID has lots of '0's.I purchased the laptop from a large company as an open box purchase. Could somebody have done something and then returned it to the company?
