Windows Hello knowing when my laptop is closed and asking me for PIN instead of fingerprint

I have a laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad Carbon X1 11G) that I often use with an external monitor (HDMI) and keyboard (wireless, USB dongle). I have Windows Hello enabled with the fingerprint reader on the laptop. But when I'm using the external monitor and keyboard, it should know not to ask me for my fingerprint and prompt for my PIN instead. I can get it to prompt for my PIN though it takes a couple of extra clicks. This seems silly -- isn't there a way for Windows Hello to tell that my laptop is closed and prompt for my PIN instead immediately?
