Specs:


-Windows 7 Home Premium

-Windows Update is set to 'Never Check For Updates' since I prefer to check manually; 2 weeks ago, it turned itself on automatically and installed updates but I manually turned the WU setting off again

-AVG Free

-MalwareBytes Anti Malware Free


I am aware that Windows Defender is built-in to Windows 7 but I was told that it should turn off automatically when anti-virus software is installed (I am using (AVG Free) but Windows Defender is still on when accessed through the Control Panel.


I checked for AVG updates and MalwareBytes Anti Malware Updates, ran scans of both (no spyware or viruses detected), rebooted, checked Windows Defender again, it stated that 'Service Has Stopped,' then it turned itself back on again 2 mins later.


1. Since AVG is installed, why didn't Defender turn off automatically?

2. How can it be turned off?

3. I like AVG and Malwarebytes but does AVG serve the purpose of anti-virus software 'and' anti malware software or does each program serve a different purpose?
