Operating system: windows 10

Malware protection: Microsoft Windows Defender

Additional malware check: Malwarebytes

This older computer is typically used as an optical drive to play CDs and DVDs. It is connected to the internet to update software and occasionally to open web pages. And rarely it is used to browse web pages. The computer was not used for one to two weeks and when booted I updated software. Opening windows defender it indicated that the computer may not be protected. Windows defender was then updated. A quick scan result displayed no malware. Malwarebytes was then updated and a scan was ran. It too displayed no malware. Adobe flash was then updated. Java was then updated. Windows was updated and required a reboot. Then the web was surfed. In the background a Microsoft Windows Defender scan was ran in full mode.

The Microsoft Windows Defender scan in full mode found malware. Scan completed on 3742091 items. Your PC is being monitored and protected. Windows defender ran the fix on the detected item. When complete it displayed "Your actions were applied successfully". And "your actions were successfully applied and your PC will continue to be monitored for threats".

It also displayed: The following error occurred: Error code 0x80070070. There is not enough space on the disk.

Clicking on computer and viewing devices and drives the OS is on drive C which has 607 GB of 667 GB free. The recovery drive is D which has 3.24 GB free of 27.9 GB.

So the Microsoft Windows Defender report error indicated the free space was insufficient with 607 GB out of 667 GB or 91% free and 9% used.

Windows Defender was ran again in quick mode and found no malware.

Windows Defender was ran again if full mode and found the same malware.

The fix was ran a second time and again displayed: "Your actions were applied successfully" The same error code appeared.

The following error occurred: Error code 0x80070070. There is not enough space on the disk.

Category: Trojan

Description: This program is dangerous and executes commands from an attacker.

Recommended action: Remove the software immediately.

Items: container file: D:\preload\install.wim

file:D:\preload\install.wim->(Image57828)\Program Files (x86)\HP Games\FATE The Cursed King\Fate-WT.exe->(EXEEmb)->(EXEEmb)

No malware was found with both updated Kapersky scans.

This is an old computer. There are no important files needed on this computer and it is used predominantly for playing DVDs and CDs.

Questions:

1) How come the Microsoft Windows Defender displays "Your actions were applied successfully" in green? And at the same time it displays an error occurred? How come it is not in red? How come it uses the word successfully?

2) Removing the malware using Microsoft Windows Defender appears to have failed with this error code. Is this finding a false positive with it not being detected by the Microsoft Windows Defender quick mode? Is this finding a false positive with it not being detected by Malwarebytes? Is this a false positive with it not being detected by Kapersky TDSSKiller? Is this a false positive with it not being detected by Kapersky Security Scan?

3) Which of the above Kapersky findings should be altered on this computer or any computer?

4) The error displayed error code 0x80070070. There is not enough space on the disk. How come it does not display how much space it needs? How many programs or files would I need to remove before it has sufficient space?

5) This computer came with windows 8 and was updated to windows 8.1 and then to windows 10. I have the windows 8 recovery media for windows 8 products dvds (1 -3). Also I have the application and driver recovery DVD. Reinstalling the windows 8 OS and then updating to windows 10 would take too much time. I remember that I had had to contact Microsoft when it did not automatically update from windows 8.0 to windows 10. I would not want to reinstall windows 8.0 and then update to windows 8.1 or windows 10 again as that would take too much time. How can the computer drive be formatted and windows 10 be reinstalled without a windows 10 disk and drivers?

6) What test can be done to determine whether this full Microsoft Defender scan is a true positive or a false positive? A google scan result found others chatting about problems with the MSE finding of the malware above and its removal. Has this problem been further evaluated after the other reports?
