Windows Defender will not start or scan - Windows 7

Last night my computer began running very slowly esp. in Chrome and Explorer. I decided to run a scan. Windows Defender would not start.


I have gone into Security and clicked Start on Windows Defender.

I do not have any other virus protection program running on my computer.


I also get a Services pop-up box, the windows defender on local computer started then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs.


Does anyone know what is going on? I have Windows 7 home premium installed.
