Windows defender for windows 7

I try to run the windows defender on windows 7 and each time I click on Start it starts for a 2 seconds and then cuts off. After that I get this message:

Windows defender service on local computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programms.

Is there a way to get it running, please?
