Windows Defender Clarification

I am using Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64 Bit and I noticed that Windows Defender is listed in the Control Panel.


1. I am confused since I was under the impression that Windows Defender was only available for Windows 8 through to Windows 10 and that Windows 7 uses Microsoft Security Essentials.


2. Does Windows Defender for Windows 7 provide real-time protection against spyware, viruses, rootkits, and other malicious software and provide online system scanning and cleaning or should it be turned off and AVG Free or Avast Free be used instead for anti virus and anti spyware protection?


3. Since Windows Defender turns off automatically when another anti-virus program is running, why does my 'Action Centre' recommend to install anti-virus software since Windows Defender s already on?
