Windows Deactivated Suddenly

I booted up my home built PC when I noticed it said that windows wasn't activated. This was very weird because earlier I was using it, and it was just fine. I went through the troubleshooting program trying to reactivate it, but all it said was "We weren't able to activate windows on this device." I saw an article saying to use the activation key you used originally to activate Windows, but that was a very long time ago and I have since then lost the key. Is there any way to reactivate windows that doesn't involve buying a whole new key?
