windows bitlocker unallocates adjacent bitlocked partition

I have my two laptop ssd's cloned to one external hdd, each with its own partition. When I enable bitlocker on one, it encrypts, so far so good. When I enable bitlocker on the other one, it encrypts it while quietly unallocating and rendering useless the adjcacent volume, leaving only unallocated space where I had a bitlocker-enabled clone backup. Thinking this was just a fluke, I re-made the partition and re-backup up the second, and then similarly lost the first backup, I was left with only unallocated space where I had the first partition and backup.
