Windows 2003 Server - Windows update fails with 0x8ddd0004

I have .Net 2.0, Windows 2003 SP1, starting last week the windows updates
fail to load. I have disabled per the link the wucontrolclass addin per the
link that appears when you search for solution. I have Internet explorer6
with SP1. I have cleared internet files , closed and reopened the browser
and still get the same error. I have downloaded the patches manually but
would like to know why the autoupdate feature quit working and how to get it
working again.
