windows 11 pro When JAVA heap expands, system crashes

I have a JAVA app that uses about 16GB VM. When I run a JAVA app with a large heap, windows crashes very quickly. Before it crashes, I can see the app using 8-12GB memory, presumably less when modified pages are moved to swap. I set the system VM to 1024-262144 so it can handle up to 256GB. When I run a gcc program under Linux Launcher to find the max malloc size, it says about 10GB. The JAVA app still crashes the system. I have all the current MS Windows Updates.
