Windows 11 on a laptop, how do you stop photos placed on the desktop from jumping to top left corner?

I am using Windows 11, on a brand new HP laptop. Any photo I place on the desktop (I am not talking about icons, the icons are fine and neither "Auto arrange" nor "Alligh to grid" are checked) immedately jumps to the top of the screen on the left. Only then can it be moved back to the original psition I placed it at. "Snap" is also off. OneDrive is unlinked. How do I prevent this? Googling for answers netted me zero workable solutions.
