This is not so much a question as a helpful tip for other users. I have spent many hours searching for a solution, even thinking that maybe my laptop was defective, because the screen just dims while I'm working (and even HP support did not know to check this on their own laptops). I finally figured out the answer and need to post it. This would have saved me weeks of off-and-on research and hours of reading the same old steps across dozens of websites and wasted time with HP Support.
