WINDOWS 11 - BLANK WHITE TASKBAR WHEN CONNECTING AND OPENING AN EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE

Please, do assist in solving this problem. I am using an Ideapad 3 core i5 with 6gb ram and 256 gb SSD. Problem is, I want to retrieve files from an external hard drive from my old PC. Using an external hard drive adapter (with 12VAC power source), the external hard drive is readable at first by the File Explorer. But after opening the said drive, it hangs and leaves the taskbar blank white. Disconnecting the hard drive disables this blank white taskbar and I can then proceed to normal use. Please, if anyone can be of help, do reply. Thank you very much in advance.
