I've tried the remedies offered in this and other forums. My computer is an HP Envy purchased last November with Windows 10 installed, and just returned from HP after the motherboard failed. I don't know what build of Windows 10 is on my machine and don't know how to find it. This problem of the Start Menu not opening seems to be a fairly common one, but does anyone have a definitive solution?
I've tried the DOS commands, scannow and the long and involved one. I also tried uninstalling Dropbox. I tried running a .bat file from another forum that did nothing but leave me without the driver for the wireless, and forced me to do a system restore. None of these seems to have had any effect - the start menu still won't open (I do get a no-frills menu when I right click), Cortana still doesn't work, I still have to go through the control panel to view notifications.
Can anyone help?
