Windows 10 start menu, startmenuexperiencehost.exe, continually crashing after update of KB5051974

Yesterday I noticed problems opening the start menu on one of my home computers (Windows 10 22H2 19045.5487) and after a bit found that this started happening immediately after KB5051974 installed. The symptoms were that clicking on the start button would not appear to be doing anything, though I could see in Task Manager a Start process launching, then suspending and closing, immediately followed by a quick Windows Problem Reporting process open/close.
