Although this issue has been happening for a while I only encounter it this week while trying to restore a system image backup on my WD 500Gb system hard drive to a brand new Seagate HDD of the same size. I did this backup was because the WD drive started to give me a message "Please back-up your data and replace your hard disk drive. A failure may be imminent and cause unpredictable failure. Press F1 to Run Setup." early this week.
I made a system image backup on the 19th on a external Seagate USB HDD and created a System Repair CD to restore the image onto the new Seagate HDD. Everything went fine until nearly 100% finish that I got the message " Image Restore Failed Parameter is Incorrect (0x80070057)". I thought maybe the system image backup I created was corrupt so I created another one yesterday after a Windows Update and also another System Repair disc. I tried restoring the new (latest) system image today and I got the same error message of Incorrect Parameter System Image Restore Failed.
I followed some of the suggestion like using Diskpart to clean the Seagate HDD but same error message when nearly 100% complete.
My Windows 10 Version is 10.0.18362 Build 18362. The bios of my LGA1151 motherboard is UEFI and I have CSM set to Enable which is Legacy 2 years ago and haven't changed it since. I have also not made any hardware changes recently apart from swapping hard drives.
I have done two system image restores on this PC some months back - from a old 500 Seagate HDD to a new Toshiba 500 GB HDD and from the Toshiba to my current Western Digital Black 500 and had no issues. On these occasions I boot from a system repair CD to do the system image restore. What could have changed ? Is there any other method or suggestion I can use ?
