Hi
I recently performed a fresh install of Windows 10 X64 using the MediaCreationTool, I already had Windows 8.1, but when I upgraded my 120GB SSD drive was nearly full, so I decided to do a fresh install and overwrite Windows 8.1.
After Installing Windows 10 I had a Windows.old file on my C drive of around 40GB, I like Windows10 so I will not be going back to Windows 8.1, so I decided to delete C:\Windows.old, but when I try and deleted the directory I get a permissions error 'Folder Access Denied you need permission from TustedInstaller to make changes to this folder'. I have ran this as administrator and get the same error, but it did delete allot of data as the Windows.old is now 500MB.
I tried to delete the remaining folder with disk cleanup but it just hangs, I then tried CCleaner and used with the 'old windows installation' option, I ran this as administrator as first time it error, this seemed to delete some files, but then errors, but straight after that I started to get the error '0xc0000022 - The application was unable to start correctly error' when ever I try to open a program like Explorer, Notepad, IE etc, so I then restarted Windows and on the logon screen, after entering my MS account it just seems to hang.
At that point I decided to restore my C drive backup I took just before trying this deketion, the restore worked and all looked ok after testing, so I again repeated the above and receive the same '0xc0000022 - The application was unable to start correctly error' after trying to delete Windows .old
Can anyone advise how I can delete the Windows.old directory? it appears something still in there is used by Windows 10? I am not too bothered about recovering the 500MB space, but I've read on a few forums that Windows.old is auto deleted by Windows after a few weeks, so I am concerned if this happens, I will start getting ''0xc0000022 - The application was unable to start correctly'' and the computer will be unusable.
Thanks for any Advice.
