I am sorry to bother you folks again, but besides not

being able to do a restore, now I can not arrange the icons on the

desktop; they will not move and stay where I put them. They jump back

to the original position.

I have Auto Arrange and Align to Grid unchecked and it still does not

work. Also I noticed that arrange in groups is grayed out.

As suggested by someWebsite information I used the task manager to run

exploder.exe. to see if the same thing happens to files when displayed

as icons, The arrange in groups was no longer grayed out but I still

could not arrange the files by hand.

You have "exploder.exe" on your computer? What kinda Physics Department are

you running down there?

See my reply to your previous thread - you may have a hijackware infection

on your hands:

Judging from another post of yours (25 Jan-10), your Vista computer may be

infected, too:

I found out how to fix the icon problem in an old post from 2004. All

I had to do is press the Insert key on the keyboard and then I could

move the icons to any place I wanted.

Still can not do a system restore though.

BTW the XP computer is my own computer at home and I thought all

Windows computers came with explorer.exe

My Vista computer's problem was a conflict between the latest version

of Zone Alarm Pro and Norton Anti Virus.

exploder or explorer? (In your original post, you said exploder.)

Are you aware that both Zone Alarm and Norton interfere with Windows XP

System Restore? See:

http://bertk.mvps.org/html/srfail.html

You should be able to run System Restore in Safe Mode with command

prompt:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304449

But wanting to run System Restore implies something is wrong with your

PC. What specifically is wrong with it?

OK, I just saw your other thread. Unfortunately, voltage spikes are

dangerous to a PC's components, especially the motherboard. If this PC

is important to you, you may need to pay a tech to check it out.

Otherwise, this page should help:

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Hardware_Tshoot

Hopefully your hardware is not damaged. (You need to confirm this,

though.) If you're lucky, System Restore will solve your Maple 11

problem. Otherwise, you should reinstall it. (I am aware of the hassle

involved. Of course, the hassle could have been easily avoided in the

first place with an uninterruptible power supply and a sound backup

strategy -- preferably, regularly created images of your hard drive).
