Win 11 Start/Taskbar and more - suddenly borked - The Background Tasks Infrastructure Service service won't start

Windows 11 - updated fairly recently. I can't tell you exactly when because Windows Update won't run (details below).Sorry that this is a bit messy - I've been banging my head against starting at 4am, then worked a full day at my job, then came home and hacked at it for a couple more hours. Now I come to you for help, but I'm a little frantic and sleep deprived.My system started acting weird yesterday and when I rebooted, login was slow and the start button and taskbar were gone after I logged in.I can run task manager and start apps that way, so I tried restarting Windows Explorer and Explore
