Win 11 - How do i get all files from desktop to appear in desktop folder of file exlporer?

Brand new win 11 home machine and i just started cleaning it up and installing apps. When i open the desktop in file explorer only 2 of the 8 items i have on my desktop appear. This is wholly unexpected behavior for any other version or install of windows. Is this a setting issue? how can i fix this? Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
