Win 10 update KB5041580 just hung/looped (preparing to configure windows message, no %age) for 12 hours

The auto install for release Win 10 update KB5041580 just hung/looped (preparing to configure windows message, no %age) for 12 hours when I triggered the update and restart.I powered down the laptop (despite the message saying not to), re-powered and it came back to the same scree. For about 20 secs, before progressing, slowly with the update, crawling through the %age points.It now shows as 'successful'.Why did it hang? Is there a better way to recover than just turn it off?
