why was my windows key deactivated

Last night I made the mistake of downloading the windows 11, 24H2 update and since then my windows key has been deactivated. I cant find my physical copy of the windows key that I had bought to re-enter the code and am wondering if there is a work around other than just purchasing another windows key.
