Why is the brightness of my screen keep dimming?

I do not have the 'night light' option on (although I've tried that too). First time I sign on for the day, the display is dim. I set it brighter using the settings app but during the day, if I leave for an hour or so, the screen is dim again! How do I stop this from happening?
