Why is my mute button not effecting certain apps?

I was playing a game while listening to music when I realized I could only hear the music in my headset, and that is when I took them off and heard the game sound coming from my monitor. I changed the sound output from my headset's headphone option to the headset option, but nothing changed and the game audio kept playing from my monitor. I muted my computer from the keyboard and the game sound wasn't effected even though I saw the sound widget come up in the top corner on my monitor. The game I was playing has no designated section in settings for changing different aspect's output device. I
