Why is my Dell laptop asking for a Bitlocker recovery key even though I never signed up for anything like that?

I've never used or even heard of Bitlocker and I think using it would be a completely useless act. Why not just use a normal password? Microsoft is really ignorant for leaving this problem (which I heard happens to many more people than I expected) after 2 years of updates.
