Why is it so difficult to connect to a Samba server?

First, I can't find it in the network storage area so I need to install wsdd. Then, it won't let me specify a custom username or password. It can't be that hard to implement something that your competitors have been able to do since 2009... Unless, I'm doing something wrong.
