Why is 24H2 upgrade failing?

A few weeks ago Windows Upgrade offered me 24H2 (I'm running 23H2), which I accepted. It installed up to a little over 60%, hung for a very long time, then gave up, undid itself, and recovered the old installation. There were no error messages, so I have no idea what was wrong.Today I got an on-screen message that Windows had downloaded an update and needed to re-start to complete installation. So (very foolishly thinking that if it had chosen to download itself it was going to work) I let it re-start, only to get a repeat of the previous scenario.
